Blush Rush
Imago talks about their third album, band rituals, and kilig moments.
By Marilyn De Mesa, Ana Gonzales, and Pearl Ganzon

Describe each other.
Zach:
Aia’s into Capoeira and chocolate.
Tim: Zach doesn’t wear slippers at home. That’s why his feet are always dirty.
Aia: Tim is lively at night but cranky during the day.
Mylene: Zach and Tim will never agree on anything in principle. They always agree to disagree--they’re like an old married couple.

What did you listen to while making your songs for your album, Blush?

Zach
: Our inner voices.
Tim: We listen to a lot of things. There wasn’t a conscious effort to sound different. Blush reflects how we feel, and we’re all happy right now.

What are your favorite songs in Blush?

Myrene: “Under Repair”
Zach: Everything!
Aia: “Taralets” and “SRO.”
Tim: But that doesn’t mean we don’t like our other songs!

What do you all contribute to the creative process?

Myrene: Laughter, good vibes and…
Zach and Myrene: …camaraderie!
Zach: My fantastic drum-playing.
Aia: Sportsmanship and penmanship!
Tim: Each one of us had to contribute something to every song. It’s not an Imago song unless we all put our ideas in.

What are the pros and cons of being in a band?

Aia: It’s the best job. I can’t complain ‘cause I’m doing something I really love. We’re able to meet a lot of people and share our music. As for cons, there are times we barely get enough sleep. There’s also the issue of stability. You can be doing well now, but you’re not so sure about the next four or five years.
Myrene: Pros? Companionship. Cons? Everything has its own con.
Zach: Cons? Stalkers. Haha!

If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing now?

Zach: I took up fine arts, major in Industrial Design, so I’d probably be a designer.
Aia: I’d be a travel show host. I’d love to travel around the world!
Tim: Something to do with food and beverage - maybe open a bar.

Any pre-show and post-show rituals?

Tim: We don’t talk much before a show.
Aia: Masungit kami. It’s like we’re all enemies!
Zach: There are some shows that make me really tense, so I find a spot and do jumping jacks to calm me down. I just need to do something strenuous.

What makes a good show?

Aia: An excellent sound system!
Zach: An excellent audience. We feed off their energy, and vice versa.

Do you get kilig when you see your faces on billboards or hear your songs on the radio?

Zach: Of course, especially when we see the billboards. My family often teases me about it.
Aia: When some radio stations decided to play “Akap”, it was like “WOW!” We were all so thankful.
Zach: When our song is playing, and we hear people singing along, it feels great.
Aia: Especially kids! Kids just brighten me up. They’re so innocent and sincere.

Your message for aspiring musicians?

Zach: While you’re still in college, go for it. Make yourself happy.
Aia: Have proper time management.
Tim: If you started a band for the money, you should evaluate things right away. This isn’t something you can do for profit.
Zach: Practice. Playing music can be so fulfilling even without the money. Take advantage of your talent.

Any dream collaborations?

Zach
: Paris Hilton and The Pussycat Dolls!
Aia: A foreign producer.
Tim: An African artist.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Aia: US, London, and France.
Myrene: Japan.
Tim: Fuji Rock Festival.
Zach: The Eiffel Tower!
