Unbreak My Heart

[my share, together with Tracy Ayson]

All Cracked Up
Once, while eating in the classroom, I tapped the shoulder of my crush, flipped my hair, and asked him if he wanted some. He looked embarrassed as he politely declined. Suddenly, my gay friend started laughing boisterously! It turned out I had lots of crumbs on the corners of my lips! Yikes!
-Sandy, 20

Laugh Trip
I was crossing the street when I saw a bunch of cute girls looking my way and smiling. I smiled back confidently. I was about to approach them, when I tripped over an island, and fell face first on the pavement. I looked up to see the girls hurrying away and laughing as they went!
-Louie, 21

The Parent Trap
I used to snitch to my boy friend’s parents whenever he cut class. But one time, when he and I were in their living room, I tried to persuad him to cut class and watch a movie with me. He kept saying “no” while nodding his head with a weird smile on his face. I promised him I wouldn’t tell his parents, when he suddenly laughed out loud. When I turned around, I saw his mom and dad by the door, and I knew they heard every single word I said! The disapproving looks on their faces convinced me never to go back to their house.
-Hazee, 20

Introductory Rites
At our acquaintance party, and I saw my crush from our philosophy class at the bar’s entrance. I felt so confident and pretty that night, so I courageously approached him. When he saw me, I flashed my best smile and said hi. Then he turned to a girl beside him and said, “Oh by the way, meet Ria—my girl friend.” Ouch!
-Cel, 18

Powder Puff Girl
My crush and I often hang out after class. His dismissal is earlier, so he waited for me outside my classroom. One time, I was assigned to erase the blackboard. I was so excited to go out and meet him that I didn’t realize my face was covered in chalk dust. I’m sure he was turned off cause he gave me a strange look and said sarcastically, “Bagong powder?”

Blush Rush
Imago talks about their third album, band rituals, and kilig moments.
By Marilyn De Mesa, Ana Gonzales, and Pearl Ganzon

Describe each other.
Zach:
Aia’s into Capoeira and chocolate.
Tim: Zach doesn’t wear slippers at home. That’s why his feet are always dirty.
Aia: Tim is lively at night but cranky during the day.
Mylene: Zach and Tim will never agree on anything in principle. They always agree to disagree--they’re like an old married couple.

What did you listen to while making your songs for your album, Blush?

Zach
: Our inner voices.
Tim: We listen to a lot of things. There wasn’t a conscious effort to sound different. Blush reflects how we feel, and we’re all happy right now.

What are your favorite songs in Blush?

Myrene: “Under Repair”
Zach: Everything!
Aia: “Taralets” and “SRO.”
Tim: But that doesn’t mean we don’t like our other songs!

What do you all contribute to the creative process?

Myrene: Laughter, good vibes and…
Zach and Myrene: …camaraderie!
Zach: My fantastic drum-playing.
Aia: Sportsmanship and penmanship!
Tim: Each one of us had to contribute something to every song. It’s not an Imago song unless we all put our ideas in.

What are the pros and cons of being in a band?

Aia: It’s the best job. I can’t complain ‘cause I’m doing something I really love. We’re able to meet a lot of people and share our music. As for cons, there are times we barely get enough sleep. There’s also the issue of stability. You can be doing well now, but you’re not so sure about the next four or five years.
Myrene: Pros? Companionship. Cons? Everything has its own con.
Zach: Cons? Stalkers. Haha!

If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing now?

Zach: I took up fine arts, major in Industrial Design, so I’d probably be a designer.
Aia: I’d be a travel show host. I’d love to travel around the world!
Tim: Something to do with food and beverage - maybe open a bar.

Any pre-show and post-show rituals?

Tim: We don’t talk much before a show.
Aia: Masungit kami. It’s like we’re all enemies!
Zach: There are some shows that make me really tense, so I find a spot and do jumping jacks to calm me down. I just need to do something strenuous.

What makes a good show?

Aia: An excellent sound system!
Zach: An excellent audience. We feed off their energy, and vice versa.

Do you get kilig when you see your faces on billboards or hear your songs on the radio?

Zach: Of course, especially when we see the billboards. My family often teases me about it.
Aia: When some radio stations decided to play “Akap”, it was like “WOW!” We were all so thankful.
Zach: When our song is playing, and we hear people singing along, it feels great.
Aia: Especially kids! Kids just brighten me up. They’re so innocent and sincere.

Your message for aspiring musicians?

Zach: While you’re still in college, go for it. Make yourself happy.
Aia: Have proper time management.
Tim: If you started a band for the money, you should evaluate things right away. This isn’t something you can do for profit.
Zach: Practice. Playing music can be so fulfilling even without the money. Take advantage of your talent.

Any dream collaborations?

Zach
: Paris Hilton and The Pussycat Dolls!
Aia: A foreign producer.
Tim: An African artist.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Aia: US, London, and France.
Myrene: Japan.
Tim: Fuji Rock Festival.
Zach: The Eiffel Tower!

Fantastic Four
Four Candy girls show you that opposites do attract. By Ana Gonzales

The Wall Flower
Lyka’s quiet, shy, and non-confrontational. She will never go against the rules, and you can never accuse her of being too friendly. She doesn’t like socializing with other people too much, but she’s a very loyal and trustworthy friend.

The Cool Rebel
Chai has lots of stories up her sleeve—from getting into trouble with her high school teachers, to all sorts of adventures and escapades. Intimidated by her? This witty gal will help you feel at ease by telling you a few hilarious jokes!

The Creative Chick
Ana’s the resident geek-slash-artist. She likes making her own accessories and doing outreach activities. She’s smart, sensitive, and a great listener, which makes her the perfect companion for those late-night kwentuhan sessions.

The Pop Princess

Marlene is the exact opposite of Lyka. She has tons of friends and so many extracurricular activities that it’s amazing how she’s able to juggle everything. This fun-loving, bubbly girl is multi-talented too—she can sing, dance, and act!

Friendly Advice
Three tips for friendship success

1. Accept
Never try to change each other. Lyka doesn’t have to bend her principles just to please her barkada. Marlene can spend time with other people and devote her after-school hours to her extracurricular activities, but that doesn’t make her less of a friend.

2. Adjust
Learn from one another—more importantly, bring out the best in each other. Lyka is always a good influence, reminding her friends to do their homework and study for exams, while Marlene convinced the rest to try theater and discover their inner superstars! Chai teaches everybody to let loose, have fun, and live life to the fullest, while Ana is constantly rounding up the gang to join her in her outreach activities.

3. Agree
Find common ground. The four girls share passion for journalism, good conversation, and coffee. They like hanging out in coffee shops and debating over everything under the sun. Make an effort to discover what you all love doing together and make that your regular bonding activity.
